With SOPHIA SÜSSMILCH AND LIFE AFTER DEATH, G2 Kunsthalle presents the first solo exhibition in Leipzig of the Berlin-based artist Sophia Süßmilch.
The exhibition presents a broad insight into the artist’s complex and diverse oeuvre. In addition to painting and sculpture, textile, photographic and video works will be on view, taking over the rooms of G2 Kunsthalle and introducing visitors to Sophia Süßmilch’s visual worlds.
Süßmilch’s complex oeuvre is characterized by her multi-perspectival mastery of diverse artistic genres, which are not simple transcriptions of an idea into various means of expression, but rather independent creative discharges that repeatedly transcend the boundaries of the genre and seemingly effortlessly and unconditionally freely take up current debates regarding gender identity, patriarchal structures, and femininity as a natural force.
Playful and seemingly effortless in her painting, she works within the canvas format while maintaining a very precise expression.
Süßmilch’s works debate and convince without dogmatically repeating slogans or applying pathetic gestures. She creates her own visual vocabulary, her own fantastic pictorial worlds and hybrids, which are not subject to any classification and yet are free of any categorization.
In doing so, she also repeatedly questions the structures of the male-dominated art establishment by expanding the classic channels of art exhibiting and skillfully using social media, such as Instagram, as a projection surface and digital exhibition space, in which she not only assumes the role of artist, but also that of curator.
