E G O S T A T E
Vivian Greven & Benjamin Houlihan
SPECIAL EXHIBITION
January 26 – May 19, 2024
Opening: Thursday, 25. Januar 2024, 5–8 pm
The title of the exhibition, EGOSTATE, refers to the theory of the Jewish-Austrian psychoanalyst Paul Federn (1871-1950), which states that the human personality consists of many different parts and not of a homogeneous unit.
Federn described these parts as so-called egostates, which represent various sub-personalities with specific characteristics and, as individual fragments, form the complexity of an individual.
The works of the painter Vivian Greven and the sculptor Benjamin Houlihan formulate thoughts about inner states, disruption, attractive and repulsive forces and the relationship between reality and simulation in different and independent ways.
The exhibition will show works by both artists that deal with elements of the composition of parts into a whole. The displacement and removal of individual segments to form a rhythmic composition plays a decisive role. Many of the works exhibited in EGOSTATE are being presented to the public for the first time.
